The Etsy Title Formula That Actually Ranks in 2026

Stop stuffing keywords into your Etsy title. Here's the exact structure top-ranking shops use — and why it works better than anything ChatGPT generates.

Type any product into Etsy search and click on the top 10 results. Read their titles carefully.

You'll notice something: they don't look like keyword dumps. They look like sentences a real seller wrote — specific, structured, readable. And yet they rank above thousands of listings stuffed with more keywords.

That's not luck. That's structure.

Why Most Etsy Titles Fail

The instinct most sellers have is to pack as many keywords as possible into 140 characters. It makes intuitive sense — more keywords, more searches, more visibility.

But Etsy's algorithm doesn't work that way. It doesn't reward the listing with the most keywords. It rewards the listing that best matches the intent of a specific search query.

A title like this:

handmade silver ring minimalist jewelry dainty stacking ring boho ring gift women

Contains 9 keywords and ranks for none of them. Why? Because it reads like a list, not a product. Etsy's algorithm (and the buyers reading it) can't identify what the primary thing is.

Compare it to this:

Dainty Silver Stacking Ring · Minimalist Band · Birthday Gift for Her

Three structured elements. One primary identity. Two modifiers. Ranks on page 1.

The Formula: Three-Part Title Structure

Every top-ranking Etsy title follows some version of this structure:

[Primary phrase] · [Key differentiator] · [Occasion or recipient]

Breaking it down:

Part 1 — Primary phrase (first 40–50 characters) The most specific, highest-search phrase for your product. This must come first because Etsy's mobile search results truncate titles at around 40 characters. If your main keyword is buried at the end, mobile buyers never see it.

Good: Personalized Pet Portrait Bad: Custom Art Print Illustration Watercolor Pet Dog Cat Portrait Personalized Gift

Part 2 — Key differentiator (middle) What makes your version of this product different? Material, style, size, technique, format.

Examples: · Watercolour Print · A4 or A3, · Sterling Silver · Adjustable, · Digital Download · Instant

Part 3 — Occasion or recipient (end) Who buys this and when? This captures high-intent buyers who are ready to purchase.

Examples: · Gift for Dog Mum, · Birthday Present for Her, · Christmas Gift Wife

The 140-Character Budget

You have 140 characters. Here's how to spend them:

| Section | Characters | Purpose | |---|---|---| | Primary phrase | 25–40 | Main keyword, must be first | | Separator | 3 | · or , | | Differentiator | 20–35 | Material, style, format | | Separator | 3 | · or , | | Occasion/recipient | 20–30 | Gift intent, who it's for |

Total: ~90–110 characters. Leave some breathing room — don't stretch to 140 with filler.

Real Before/After Examples

Handmade Candle

Before: soy candle handmade natural scented candle home decor aromatherapy candle gift wax candle uk lavender relaxing

After: Lavender Soy Candle · Hand-Poured, Natural Wax · Birthday Gift for Her

Why it works: "Lavender Soy Candle" is the specific search. "Hand-Poured, Natural Wax" differentiates from mass-produced. "Birthday Gift for Her" captures gift-intent buyers.

Digital Planner

Before: digital planner 2026 ipad planner goodnotes notability planner digital download undated weekly planner

After: 2026 Digital Planner · iPad & GoodNotes · Undated Weekly and Monthly Layout

Why it works: "2026 Digital Planner" is what buyers search. iPad & GoodNotes is the differentiator (buyers filter by app). The layout detail answers the next question buyers have.

Print-on-Demand T-Shirt

Before: funny cat shirt women cat lover shirt cat mom tshirt kitten shirt cute cat graphic tee unisex

After: Funny Cat Mum T-Shirt · Cute Kitten Graphic Tee · Gift for Cat Lover

Why it works: "Funny Cat Mum T-Shirt" matches high-intent search. The graphic tee detail sets expectations. "Gift for Cat Lover" captures the large segment of buyers shopping for someone else.

The Separator Question: · vs , vs |

Any separator works. The dot (·) is most common in top-ranking shops and reads cleanest. Some sellers use commas, which is fine. Avoid slashes (/) — they read awkwardly.

The purpose of the separator is to signal to Etsy's algorithm that you're introducing a new phrase, not continuing one run-on string.

What to Put in the First 40 Characters

On mobile Etsy search (where most buyers are), your title gets cut off after roughly 40 characters. Only the first portion is visible before a buyer clicks.

This means your single most important keyword phrase — the one that makes a buyer think "yes, that's what I'm looking for" — must be in those first 40 characters.

Test your title: count the first 40 characters. Does it clearly describe what the product is? If someone saw only those 40 characters, would they click?

If yes: good structure. If no: restructure so the primary phrase leads.

The Common Trap: ChatGPT Titles

Many sellers try to use ChatGPT to write Etsy titles. The problem: ChatGPT doesn't know Etsy's 140-character limit, doesn't know the separator convention, doesn't know that "handmade" is a wasted keyword, and doesn't have access to what buyers are actually searching for on Etsy right now.

It generates plausible-looking titles that violate every principle above. And then you have to manually fix them, which takes longer than writing the title yourself.

Getting 13 Tags That Match Your Title

The title formula above is only half the equation. Your 13 tags need to cover the searches your title doesn't — different occasions, different recipient angles, related style terms.

TagRocket writes both at once. You answer 10 structured questions about your product, and it generates a title following the exact formula above plus 13 tags that cover your remaining search angles — all validated against real Etsy search patterns.
